Light is delivered

by means of the optic nerve

to the brain

where it is perceived

What is refraction?

Who is the woman on the shore?

The unconscious movement

of the newborn eye

quickly becomes

the primary interpreter of light

Why doesn’t she move?

What does she see on the lake?

Sunlight off water

diffuses her image

into tiny dots

that cause my vision to blur

Why is she wearing a black chemise?

Why doesn’t the wind stir her hair?

Words are given only

to objects illuminated

by what is seen now

and not soon forgotten

Why does she never speak?

Who do I imagine her to be?

In the absence of light

the mind formulates images

based upon other senses

searching for the same subject

Who is voyeur, seer or seen?

What will be lost if she turns?
