Twice I’ve dug in against death,

twice I’ve seen its glow

on the faces of those

unaware their lives were going

to burn into extinction

in the next twenty-four hours.

It wasn’t a light or flame

I saw in their faces

but a brilliance

infusing the skin.

They were smiling just then,

all the struggle gone,

suddenly looking again

so young and able.
