They brought the two dogs

back onto the balcony,

hushed them at their feet

A few minutes before,

the August storm scattered hats,

exploded the umbrellas

of people dashing to and fro

on the streaming sidewalks

The temperature wisped

back down into the low 80’s

as fast as the cars they watched

splashed through the streets

Oversized in lawn chairs,

she in tube top looking right,

he in undershirt looking left,

they wondered aloud about where

all those people were going

in such a stampede
