Darwin when the Beagle docked

proclaimed the end of miracles,

revealed revelation a ruse

conceived by humans to soothe themselves.

There in the Galapagos

he suddenly saw that Time

scattered its remains

in no special order.

Layer by layer the transmutation

of wings and eyes and claws

crept forward on its own

without the fingerprint of God.

Darwin , holding high a fossil,

wondered if creatures could love

if living things lived

for their own love alone.

Only the undaunted see what Darwin saw

and still hold fast a lover’s hand,

knowing the stony eyes of the universe

never really blink.
