In cross currents of early morning

a wide brown leaf clatters through

brittle branches of a sea grape tree

and is delivered at my bare feet

The old leaf crackles as I spread it wide,

a page, I venture, from a sacred scribe,

its lines in the style of the tree

from which it fell

Though the headlines are no longer bold,

the news is good
