Out this way tumbleweeds
wash against barns, barbed wire,
wheat and prairie grass,
splash over orange space
on geological maps –
the buried sand dunes
of Edwards County
We catch a turnpike breeze
past islands
of farmhouse and tree,
tack across
an endless day
of headwinds and dust
to a smooth clear line
where sky and field touch
Sure enough,
as tides come and go,
as the sun rises and sets,
in-laws are a rockin’
dull and cranky on the porch
