The raccoon appears

when he least expects her:

mangy coat, rat teeth and mask,

rummaging the memorabilia

he’s stored on his back porch

Rattling the kitchen window,

unable to scare her away, he shouts,

“Terri, why do you pester me so?

You never let me have you

back in the old days and now

you come scratching around

later in life when a man

just wants a little peace”

She pretends not to hear

Must be something in his past

she still wants to steal
