Jagged stone steps rose steeply

from the gravel road through the trees,

turned left and lifted into spotted shade

Moss marked the place

No sign told where the steps led

nor was there a house to see

I climbed to the crook,

followed the steps further

into the forest with my eyes

Crickets and tree frogs

in chorus

chirruped the only sounds
