Caught in the country fence,
the elk calf curled fetal and mewled
Sandaled, I marched from my deck
upward the meadow,
lifted her over wooden pine poles,
held her, bone and bristling fur,
stiff hair rough on my skin
as I released her
She struck out, yeeking across the side hill
so quickly I quickly lost sight
of her white cotton bottom
The cow ran up and down the meadow
the rest of the night
My human smell had forever
parted them
