An anomaly, coyote thin, the creature

with oversized head and tail of a husky,

courses alongside a full-furred fox

mid morning through the tall clover hay

of the mountain meadow

Locals and tourists blame the crossbreed

for what’s missing –

pet kittens, small pedigree dogs,

gone from condos, log homes

and ski lodges

As I watch it and the vixen leap, heads bobbing,

coats ruffled by the wind, they look to be sporting,

celebrating clouds and skies in defiance

of unnatural laws preached by fearful old men

from ancient tablets of stone
